D.C. Rap Up: Longest Shutdown; Ultrasounds for Abortion

Welcome to the D.C. Rap Up, a weekly rundown of the most important health policy stories. Cleavon Gilman, MD, an emergency physician in New York City, remixes the news and drops the beats to catch you up with what’s up.

Government’s shut down, the longest possibly

But D.C. Rap Up’s back up with health policy

There’s lots of controversy surrounding abortion

From those who support it to those who abhor it

In Tennessee those terminating pregnancy

Need to see the ultrasound of the entity

And in Arizona, those seeking to end a birth

Must be asked first … if they’ve been coerced

And the problem’s unsettled at the federal level

Where funding for abortion is in general peril

Then there’s factors that fracture the fiscal process

Like the latest changes making billing complex

Except, rules for contraceptive coverage

Were blocked nationally by federal judges

In other news, drug costs led the way

And a drug was approved by the FDA

Drugs prices equate to large scales of money

And the U.S. pays more than other wealthy countries

80% more to be exact!

But under 30% where we need to match

So Azar defends a plan to lower part B

Because the price of prescription drugs are costly

Likewise, hospitals are feeling the stress

Because drug spending increased by 20%

Which led to a squeeze on hospital budgets

Staffing cuts and patient care disrupted

And lastly, a new drug must be noted

Romosozumab for osteoporosis

And that’s it for this week’s wrap up

See you next week on that D.C. Rap Up
