Shrank is coming to Humana from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he has served as the chief medical officer of the system’s insurance services division since 2016. He has also held senior roles at CVS Health and served as director of research and rapid-cycle evaluation at the CMS’ Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation.
“Dr. Shrank’s background as a practicing physician, along with his experience in integrated health systems, retail, government and academia makes him the ideal addition to our team,” Humana CEO Bruce Broussard said in statement. “His expertise in value-based reimbursement and clinical outcomes for chronic conditions is especially important as we advance our integrated care strategy.”
Shrank replaces Dr. Roy Beveridge, who last year said he would retire from Humana in 2019. Beveridge will remain with Humana several months after Shrank joins to help with the transition. Humana credited Beveridge with advancing the insurer’s clinical strategy and leading the company’s “bold goal” initiative to improve population health by addressing the social determinants of health in different U.S. communities.
